Social Media Just For Writers

I’ve never done a review for a non-fiction book before, but Frances Caballo’s Social Media Just for Writers perked my interest and I figured it might be an interesting source for the writers in our blogging community.
You wrote your book and sold copies to family members, friends, and colleagues. Now you want to reach readers around the state, across the country, or on the other side of the world. But how? With social media, you can build your platform and reach markets you never imagined possible before. In this book you will learn how to: create your Facebook fan page and initiate active engagement with your readers, use a myriad of Twitter applications to help you economize your time while expanding your tribe, optimize your LinkedIn profile with keywords, tackle Google+ with renewed confidence, build Pinterest pinboards and use them to promote your books and blog, and round out your online strategies with offline marketing techniques.

My Review: I especially liked how Caballo gave each social network its own personality, comparing it to well known authors and classic literature and providing details into the history of each.  Her book covers the biggest social networks used by writers including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google +, Picasso, Pinterest, and the world of blogging. As someone who’s familiar with Facebook, Blogger, and Twitter, I was impressed with how much I didn’t know (um, which was a lot).

Caballo gives an easy-to-understand run down of the purpose each network serves, basic usage and then expands into more detail; providing little known (at least to me) settings and applications that can help you promote you, your brand, and your books, and especially keep track and stay organized in who/how your work is reaching its audience, not to mention the various useful applications that can be employed by each network.

The only concern I had while reading was that, while Caballo’s detailed instructions and images are definitely helpful when it comes to learning about each network, and how to engage and develop your settings- I’d be afraid with the rapid and incessant way many of these networks (like Facebook and Twitter) are changing and evolving every day, some of the information could become quickly out-dated.

Also, the wealth of information could be a little overwhelming at times, but then again, I’m not at a point in my career where everything sited in each chapter is useful to me (yet). That said, I really liked how Caballo was careful to explain how each writer really needs to find what programs, networks and apps work best for them- taking into account their time constraints, preferences and personalities.

When I’m at the point where I have a book to promote (thinking positive here:), I’d say Social Media Just for Writers will be an absolute asset since it provides a clear and in-depth source for anyone who wants to expand their audience using social networking.

What social network do you use most? How long did it take you to master your favorite network? Did you take measures to get the most out of the network professionally?

Hey thanks for this. I'm downloading today. I lack all the social media networking skills.

I definitely take my time to consider how to use social media to greatest effect. When I have a blog post I want to promote, or specific news about a book, I stop to consider where best to post the news: Twitter? My personal Facebook page? My author Facebook page?

I try not to splatter everything everywhere. That's a shotgun approach. It's sloppy, and it annoys people who follow me in more than one place. It might even be called spam!

Sounds like an awesome book. I just read Chuck Sambuchino's book on Platform which is very good (I'm interviewing him in February) and it really has me thinking of Platform.

I know I need to join Twitter and see what I can do with it but my favorite way to social network is blogging. You can say so much with it.

I loved this book and am reviewing it today on my blog, too. I learned more about FB from it than I did from FB for Dummies, which takes a more general approach. I also learned a few tricks about Pinterest I didn't know. Heck, there was a lot about most of the social networks that I knew nothing about.

I'm starting to use FB more. I used to like Twitter, but now it's like an excess chatter of 'buy my books' ads. :(

My concern would be the same that you pointed out - the ever changing social media. But with an ebook, I guess you can makes changes almost as they happen.

I don't think I use anything really effectively - I trying to give Hubby ideas (he's a musician, but I imagine some of the suggestions would work for him to). This book is going on my list!

Interesting. I just saw Stina's review of this book, too. I love that the author has pictures. I'm such a visual person that I do better when I'm learning something if I can look at them.

I just read about this at Stina's. I only use blogger, FB and Twitter. Not sure I have time for anything else :-/

Hey, thanks for this review! Maybe the book will come in handy one day? *fingers crossed*

Ha, I just read Stina's review as well... From a non-writer perspective, I think Twitter and blogs blend well together as FB annoys me (but I understand its value for authors).

This is the second time I've seen this book today. It sounds amazing and a tool that could help me prioritize marketing and personal platform.

I heard about this book. I agree, it's something to buy at the moment you need it since technology changes so quickly.

You do have to be careful about any books covering technology, because things change so fast, but most publishers of these kind of things keep websites that they update regularly.

This book sounds pretty useful, for someone who is published.

I guess this is the "Twitter for Dummies" I've been looking for!

As someone with only a toe in the social media pond, this sounds like a book I can use.

In other words, if I'm going to read it, read it SOON.
Blogging is my primary social network. Then Twitter and Goodreads. That's as far as I intend to go though.

I looooove blogging, but I also like Twitter. I like Goodreads to read reviews and talk about books. I use LinkedIn for my real life (finding a job, lol). Speaking of books....Katie....I finally sent in my R&R. AFTER A YEAR!!!!! wahoooo!!!!!

This is the second positive review I've seen about this book, so I'm gonna have to get it. For sure, I could use some pointers. So far, blogger is my biggest networking area. I have Twitter and Facebook accounts, but do next to nothing with them.

I'm glad you've found it useful! Interestingly enough, I've had different preferences for different social networks depending on where I am in life (by that I mean, how much time I have online, how busy I am, etc).

Thanks for being on the tour!
