So Much For That...

So much for an easy month of August.  I thought things were crazy last week.  But then this weekend the shit really hittith the fan.

My six year old daughter, Lily had a stuffy nose and cough for the last few days. Friday night she woke up and said she couldn't sleep cause she was coughing so much.  She slept in our bed but was up quite a bit.

Saturday she woke up pale and tired, complaining of a pain in her throat and stomache and she ended up throwing up breakfast.  We called the doctor and he came to see her and ordered us to go get x-rays right away, thinking it might be pneumonia.

The x rays came up empty and thank God a pediatrician caught us on our way out and said we should take her to a different hospital quickly (the one we were at didn't have a pediatrics wing).  So off we went to the emergency room at a bigger hospital.  And its a good thing we did.  Because when we arrived, Lily had a sever asthma attack.  Blue lips, pale vacant eyes, and so much trouble breathing she couldn't even speak even while on oxygen.  It was SO scary.

She was admitted to the hospital and I ended up staying there with her Saterday night and into Sunday afternoon.  They woke her every three hours for nebulizer treatment so she didn't get a lot of rest. We arrived home yesterday and now she's in our bed playing hospital (I have to bring her every meal on a tray and say 'bonjour petite dame' when I enter)

She's got an appointment Thursday with an allergy specialist.  We just might have to find a new home for the newly acquired Grizzly if it turns out she's allergic to cats but the attack could have been brought on by the virus as well.  Guess we'll see!

I'll do my best to visit you guys this week.  I miss my dose of daily bloffee.

I'm sorry to hear this. So many more children are developing asthma and allergies these days. I got asthma when I was in my mid-30's, though not too badly.

when our son was diagnosed with diabetes it threw our entire world into what seemed at the time like an incredibly nasty tailspin.

no doubt your life will change and adapt, but you will get through this. things will become easier, one day at a time.

and you're not alone. there are thousands of parents and kids just like you and your daughter, people who are living with the same conditions and who would be happy to listen to you both and share their experiences. reach out to them!

Sounds like some real shizz happened this week Katie! I hope the little one is feeling better today and I hope that you are able to find out what's causing it and address it immediately!

I hope it's not Grizzly!!!! Happy Monday :)

So sorry! Glad you got her to the hospital and I hope everything works out. My youngest had breathing problems as an infant (no sign of problems now (she's 10) and I know how scary it can be!

Best of luck for a great week

There's nothing more terrifying than when your child is sick - especially with breathing difficulties. So scary.

I'm glad you got her to the right place with the right treatments! Glad things are looking up.

Glad you got it figured out and that she's doing okay now - you're absolutely right, that would be scary.

Take care of her and yourself!

I can't even imagine how frightened you were - I'd have been terrified. I'm glad Lilly is okay now! Hopefully this next week will be easier. :)

How terrifying! Hopefully it will soon be a fuzzy blur for Lilly, though. It sounds as if she's already making the most of it, with the "Bonjour, petite dame" thing and her food on a tray.

I am hoping for a simple answer for you. As unfortunate for Grizzly as it would be, a cat allergy is something you can solve.

Urgh! It is so scary when kids can't breath! My kids each had croup and there is nothing scarier! I love that she is making you wait on her and hope she recovers quickly and completely (and that you don't have to get rid of the grizzly)

Severe asthma attacks are so scary! As a respiratory therapist, I see asthma attacks every day, but there's a difference between a mild and severe, and when I see a patient like your daughter, it makes me nervous. In the last year, I've had four scary asthma patients come in. When they are pale and limp with an unfocused stare, it's the worst, but just before that comes the sitting on the edge of the bed, shoulders hunched as they concentrate on breathing.

In these cases, I tend to hang around and suggest things to the doc after giving the initial neb treatment. Like, "Hey doc, how about I start an hour long treatment on the kid in 12?" Meanwhile, I've already gathered the meds. ;-) lol.

Glad your daughter is feeling better.

It's so so sad when little kids are sick, and I'm sure it's a zillion times worse when it's you own baby. :( I'm sending many blessing and positive thoughts your way!

Oh my! Thanks goodness she's all right and thank goodness for French Health Care! I'm so sorry to hear about this but very glad to know she's all right.

May 9 year old daughter has something called exercise induced asthma, which I swear did not exist when I was a kid. She pretty much never has an attack, but has to carry an inhaler whenever she has a soccer game.

Sorry your little girl had to go through all of that, but thank God you were at the hospital when the worst happened.

{{Hugs}} to you and your daughter. My two youngest both had breathing issues when they were little. Luckily, they pretty much grew out of it. My middle still has an inhaler but hasn't had to use it for years, thank goodness. Hopefully yours is just virus induced and she'll get through it. Prayers being said for you all.

It's wonderful to hear that she is recovering well. After such an experience, she deserves to play hospital for a while.

Scary! I'm so glad she's okay. My daughter has asthma and we've had to bring her to the er in the middle of the night before! Not fun. It's hard as a parent to watch your child struggle to breathe!

I'm so sorry to hear this. I now what you must have been going through and how your daughter must've felt. I've had many experiences with pneumonia and severe asthma. I have my own nebulizer at home it's so bad. I always feel so sad when I hear of a young child suffering like this. I know how hard it is and wouldn't wish it on anyone. Ever.

I wish her well and know my thoughts are with your family.

Oh my, scary indeed! I have two girls of my own, so I can understand just how scary that would be. I wish you well and my thoughts are with you and your daughter!

I'm glad things are better. My little bear has some health issues, but nothing so dramatic! The most amazing thing is how she has adapted to all the different medicines, appointments, and procedures we've had to do to manage her condition. Here's to easier, happier days for you guys!

I'm so sorry to hear this - that must have been so scary! What a blessing that you got to that other hospital in time! I hope she's not allergic to the cat, he's such a cutie.

So sorry to hear about this- it's the worst thing in the world when your kids are sick, we'd take it for them every time if we could...

bad asthma attacks are scary enough when you're old enough to know what's going on, poor little Lily. So glad she's home now and hope the whole family rests up and feels better soon.

Man, August is kicking us hard on the blogosphere isn't it? This month is/has been one I will remember by twisting that age old maxim..."this too shall suck."

big hugs
bru

Scary stuff!! I'm glad everything turned out okay. The timing of the new kitty arrival and this attack is suspicious though.

ACK! How scary! Sooo glad she's okay! Of course now I'll be paranoid the next time one of the kids gets a cold (which should be in the next 2 weeks since school starts again tomorrow)

I can't imagine how frightening that was to watch Lily go through that! Even if it's not Grizzly (or until you know it's not), it doesn't hurt to start taking precautions. One of my brothers and I had severe allergies/asthma growing up (hospitalized frequently) and my parents wouldn't get rid of our pets. They simply made our two rooms pet free zones. Doors closed at all time so the dogs and cats couldn't get it. They kept throws on the couches and chairs that were easily removed when we wanted to sit down (and made furniture cleaning a snap). My mom steamed the carpets every other week. Dogs were bathed weekly, cats brushed daily and wiped down. I honestly think the pets were more work than we were! You've only got the one kitty so it wouldn't be hard to pet wipe him once a week and keep him out of her room. Air filters are the best thing ever created too! This way even if Grizzly is far down on the trigger list, you're already doing things to make him even less of a trigger? Glad things sound better now. I love that she had you play hospital when you got home!
