The Analogy Wars

Most of my long-time readers know that I have a hankering (okay, fine. An addiction) for comparing everything in life to writing.

There was that time I compared querying agents to being a circus dog.

Going on a first date.

Being a piƱata.

Having a hangover.

Or feeling like sperm. (You’d have to read it to understand.)

Or the time I compared manuscript beginnings to the crowing head of a baby. (yeah. I know. This one still makes me cringe and I’m the one who wrote it.)

Bottom line is- just about everything in the world can be compared to writing/being a writer/ querying –and I’m pretty sure every blogger has gotten caught up in the analogy wars at one time or another. We are writers after all.

So I thought we’d put it to the test.  On the bottom of Wednesday’s post- I’ll put a short promt.  For example:

Querying/Writing…
is like choosing deodorant…
is like fishing…
is like wrapping a gift for someone you don’t like… etc.

And, if you feel up to it (or are like me and never have anything planned for Friday posts)- I challenge everyone to elaborate. You can either post the end of the analogy here in the comments section or post it up on your blog for Friday with the title ‘Analogy Wars’ so I see it in my reader.  Every week I’ll pick the funniest or most original one and post it up on my blog before the next war prompt is given.

Today’s analogy begins:
Querying/Writing is like picking a check-out line at the grocery store…

I bid you well writerly jedi. May the force of quirky-analogy-writing be with you.

Whichever line you choose you get someone who's having a bad day, looks at your purchases and sniffs with disdain, then tries to get rid of you as soon as possible.

Haha, love it! You always have the best analogies. :)

Querying is like picking a checkout line at the grocery store. The lines are always long, and the express lanes are the quickest way to make sure you end up being shown the door.

There are no short cuts.

Haha! I have a tendency to compare writing to everything under the sun, too. Love your idea, Katie!

Ahhhh yes. Me likes a challenge...

Doesn't matter which line you select - it will always be the longest.

... you think you've got the bestest line with less people only to realise it's the "basket with 6 items" only line and you have a trolley full with your monthly shopping.

LOL!!! Yes, ok, feeble analogy but this always happens to me!! Take care

Coulding resist the challenge lol! So let me give this try.

Querying is like picking a check-out line at the grocery store…

because most of the lines are long and will take forever but don't try to go to the express check out girl. She'll refuse you because you have eleven items and she only takes ten.

Querying is like picking a check-out line at the grocery store ...

because so much depends on the people ahead of you in line.

I can't help but smile every time I think about that sperm post. :)

I'll be back Friday!

Hahaha--this is really an amazing compilation of analogies. And, because I have been up since 3am, I am completely depleted of wit. Sorry. I'm suddenly glad I have my groceries delivered.

Writing is like picking a check-out line at the grocery store: you want to go through the "ten items or fewer lane" in the hopes of zipping through the task of greeting the cashier, but in reality, it only retards you even more than if you were to have taken your time at the regular check-out lines. All in good time.

Ha! I can't argue with you there. My entire blog happens to be one great big Rubik's Cube analogy.

But I'll have to check out your 'sperm' post. I'm sure it's fun.

Your checkout line is a great prompt. :-)

I pick the one with the cutest girl, give her my number on a piece of paper, then never hear back from her.

I do this too - but not in as many posts as you! :)

Querying is like picking a check-out line at the grocery store ... thanks to the internet, you don't have to do it any more if you don't want to ;-)

I dedicated an entire post today for this! I do love a good analogy.

Querying/Writing is like picking a check-out line at the grocery store only to find you are standing next to someone with REALLY bad B.O.

Would you go so far as to describe yourself as eccentric?

To quote from one of my favourite tv shows, 'The Big Bang', I think you're bat-shit crazy... but in a nice way, naturally ;)

But to add to the fun, here's my shot:

Querying/writing... is like walking up stairs, stopping on the landing and wondering why you're there?
