Chicken Pox Helps You Read...

So, my middle child came home from school Monday with chicken pox.
Yay. *cue false cheer and mini fist-pump*.
With current-day vaccinations and fading childhood recollection, I had near forgotten about this wonderful spot-casting illness. That is, until my six-year-old informed me that she had ‘pimples’ on her stomach and under her armpitsL

The doctor told me to expect my other children to start turning spotty sometime this week as well. Lovely! The only highlight of the situation is that I've downloaded a few books onto my kindle in order to pass the time taken off work to watch over my contagious kid.

Hex Hall book 3- Spellbound. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire series. Sophie’s snarky and quick-witted humor keeps us smiling and rooting for her throughout family revelations, boy troubles, demon attacks and encounters with evil headmistresses.

Junk Miles by Liz Reinhardt was a fast-paced read.  Still love her characters, emotion, romantic tension, and love-triangles. I would have finished it in one sitting if I didn’t have to, you know, sleep and eat and make sure the household doesn’t fall apart.

I’m currently reading Wicked Game by Jeri Smith Ready. I became a fan of hers after reading the first two instalments in her ‘Shift’ series so I decided to give her adult urban fantasy a try- especially after reading the endorsement from Charlaine Harris.  The first couple chapters were a little slow going but now that I’m half-way through, I am not disappointed in where things are headedJ

What are you guys currently reading? Any recommendations for a woman in quarantine?

Chicken pox wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for all the itching and the fact that it can leave permanent scars by scratching off the scabs.

It's surprising your kid would get it because I swore they did require vaccinations for it now.

You're in for a week of fun! Yeah I know, not really.

Oh I need to read Spellbound. I remember as a kid trying to get chicken pox to be off school. I succeeded. Hope your week goes okay.

Oh noes! Chicken pox!! Oh dear!!! Hope your daughter gets better soon!

I remember my measles time. All I did was sleep while my mum force fed me lucozade! LOL!! No she didn't force feed me really but I had to drink lucozade three times a day! LOL!

Take care

Argh! Poor kids. Poor you. I hope you actually do get some reading done! I haven't been reading much lately but am about to start Divergent (finally!). Hang in there this week, and good luck!

Arrrgh, chicken pox. My oldest had it while in nursery and has a scar on her chin from one of the spots. I've got it all to come again with my youngest. I feel for you and your little one.

Oh, I feel your pain!! Three of my four kids had chicken pox over the Christmas holidays. (And they'd had the vaccine and a bout of chicken pox once already. Apparently, 13% of the population doesn't form antibodies the first time.) My kids loved oatmeal baths. They make nice packages nowadays that don't leave the tub too filthy and you can run the oatmeal water down the drain.

Ugh, I hate the chicken pox. Hugs to the kids. Anyone who has ever had CP, knows how much they suck and itch and itch some more. Not fun! I just finished Jodi Piccoult's Lone Wolf. She usually depresses the hell out of me, but I liked this one. :)

aww that stinks about the chicken pox.
I'm reading windup girl by paolo bacigalupi right now and i know it's supposed to be amazing, but i'm not feeling it yet. I think the problem is i just finished up Lies of Locke Lamora, which was so excellent that it's hard for me to start something new

Way to look at the bright side!

I am currently reading a christian devotional that is amazing- The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Aww! I hope the chicken pox doesn't spread too far in your household.

Those books look good. I'm currently reading Alex Cavanaugh's CassaStar which I'm really enjoying. Unfortunately the last two books I read don't come out until May, though.

I've heard of Hex Hall, but not the others. They don't really look like dude books, but that first one does have a sword on the cover, so that certainly shows promise.

Here's to hoping your kidlets get better soon!

I'm learning a lot about chickenpox reading these comments. Including something about bathing in oatmeal?!?

Anyway, hope it passes smoothly for you all.

I was the one who gave it to all my siblings. Missed making my first Penance with my class because of it.

Ah, chicken pox. Lovely. I need to read Wicked Game--that sounds like so much fun!

Yikes. Well, at least you have books to get you through... good luck! Will be sending lots of non-scratchy vibes.

I hope your daughter feels better soon.

I am not sure anyone would enjoy my current reading list--military history and more. I am sure you'll get some good suggestions from your other readers.

I just read POSSESS and THE KINGDOM OF CHILDHOOD. They were both great!

Sorry to hear your daughter has chickenpox. I had it for two weeks at age fourteen, just one year before the vaccine finally came to the States. I never found out who gave it to me, but at least I was able to give it to my little brother. I'll be vaccinating all of my future kids against chickenpox without question, and cannot fathom how there could be opposition to and outright lies about vaccines by a small but very vocal minority.

Right now I'm reading Nancy Garden's Annie on My Mind, a classic YA novel I've been wanting to read since I first heard about it in 1995. (The book came out in 1982.) So far, I'm really enjoying it, and the slower, more literary pace that I'm used to in young people's books. It's nice to read something that doesn't zip along at lightning speed but takes time to tell the story and develop the characters.

Roots ....by Alex Hailey. Read it before?

Just a thought, do you read to your children now that they're bedridden?
When my children were sick, I'd read them stories, kids stories obviously. Now that they have grown up, my son is 33 and my daughter is about to turn 32, we will sometimes sit on the couch and I will read to them, when they are visiting that is. They love it. When last did someone read a story to you?

Creepy Query Girl said...

Thanks Geoff:) I remember my mom used to loan nancy drew books from the library and read to us when we got bored over summer break. I try and do the same thing with my kids- mostly little house on the prairie books but Monday afternoon Julie was thrilled to go and pick out 'anybook she wanted' and we read together. She's at that age where she's learning to sound words out in english (while learning to read and write in french at school). I had to tell her to take a break after the third but if it were up to her, we would have read all day.

My three youngest boys all came down with Chicken Pox within a day of each other. Ugh.

So, the vaccination didn't work?

E. Arroyo said...

Wow...my youngest three never got them. =) My oldest did.

Chicken Pox was my worst fear as a working mother. That was definitely a one week illness and it was guilt city. Thank God 3 of my children went through it when they were under 5 and I was homne for most of it. However, this was before they had shots for it and I sweated out the forth child getting this - and getting it she did. My husband and I took turns being home, me at the beginning when it was bad, he the end when things were getting better. Whatever, we all got through it, but it was nasty.

Both mine had it when they were young. It was almost a relief to get it out of the way. I hope you don't come down with it, it comes out as shingles in adults which can be really nasty. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Right now I'm spending most of my reading time reviewing my students' essays, so I'll happily trade my reading list for yours. :) Sorry about your kid's chicken pox, though; I hope that your daughter feels better soon. Don't they give baking soda baths to kids with chicken pox? Or does that actually work? I had chicken pox when I was that age, but I don't remember it much.

Laura Pauling said...

Sounds like you'll have a busy week! Hope it doesn't get really bad. It's so vaccinated here in the U.S. that a child getting it is unheard of.

Theresa Milstein said...

I'm sorry your child has the chicken pox. Best if it spreads. I got it bad when I was 19. I have a couple of scars on my face and a little one in my eye. Lucky for me, as it wound up on my eye and in my throat, it began to recede. It's worse to get it when you're an adult. I'm so glad my kids were vaccinated.

Having chicken pox was one of my favorite experiences--I went to a babysitter as a kid, but when I had the pox I got to go to my grandma's EVERY DAY and my great grandpa was visiting, so he read to me again and again and again. I can see how it would be a hassle as a mom, though. My kids are vaccinated because my hubby never had it. GREAT excuse to read! (I'm reading my own darn book (aka: editing))

I'm reading Ann Prachett's State of Wonder and liking it though the pace isn't super fast. I just finished Joyce Carol Oates The Corn Maiden which is a collection of short stories--very disturbing horror tales (in a pyschological way, not gory).

My latest blog reviews fellow blogger Johaana Garth's Losing Beauty which sounds more up your alley.

I'm reading THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS NEST since it just recently came out in paperback. :)

I'm reading THIS BURNS MY HEART and THE GOD OF ANIMALS. Both great writing, but neither of them YA. :/

A.L. Sonnichsen said...

And I'm sorry about the chicken pox! I remember having those as a kid. My kids have all been vaccinated, but I guess you can still get it even with the vaccine? But maybe it's not as severe? Hope they're well soon! And happy reading. :)

Tonja said...

What? I thought chicken pox was all gone. There's no way my kids would let me read if they were all itchy. Good luck! The Help was awesome.

Ack! Sorry to hear this. My two had it when they were little, not fun!

I've just finished the Dragon Tattoo trilogy - probably not good if you want light reading though :-)
