FMFB- What's Up With the Zombies?

Good Morning everybody and welcome to another Friday Morning Follower’s Bloffee! The weather in the parisian suburbs has been pure nastiness this week (grey, cold and rainy), but it's probably appropriate for today's FMFB debate.

For any newbies - all you have to do to participate in bloffee is:

1. Comment. 2. Tell us what you’ve brought for breakfast. ( I'll be serving up some virtual pancakes with maple syrup)  3. Find someone in the comments section you don’t recognize and check out their blog. Voila! An instant friend and potential follower connection has been made.

Today’s debate: What’s up with zombies?

I have yet to watch ‘The Walking Dead’ but I’ve heard it’s a great show. Truth is, I’m not a big fan of zombies. They gross me out. And the idea of a person and their loved ones at constant risk of being eaten by zombies kind of stresses me out more than anything else. That said, I have noticed an increase in all things ‘zombie’ and ‘zombie apocalypse’ in the last six months or so.

Now, from where I’m sitting, the fascination with zombies must be different from the fascination with witches, vampires, werewolves or other creatures of mystique. Zombies are mindless decaying corpses who feed off people’s brains and infect them. (again. Yuck.)

There is nothing sexy about zombies.

Which leads me to the conclusion that the excitement at the idea of zombies running amuck must stem from what regular people become in the case of a zombie apocalypse.  Suddenly we are the beautiful, skilled creatures of heightened intelligence with the need to kill or be killed. Only the ingenuous, quick, or lucky will survive.

Or maybe I’m wrong. So, if you’re privy to the zombie phenomenon, please fill me in- What’s up with the zombies?

Hope you all have a great weekend!

I don't get the zombie love either. They totally creep me out. You're brave, though. I would have never posted an image of one on my blog, lol.

I'm bringing lots of coffee as usual. I don't get zombies either and am not really into reading books about them.

The Walking Dead is an AMAZING show. I'm not a zombie fan either, but I loved the first season. I don't know if you heard about those zombie-themed races, but I ran one in April and it was a lot of fun. I think I'm all zombie-d out, though... Happy Friday!

You obviously haven't read Generation Dead. Yes, it is possible to have good looking zombies. :)

I don't get the zombie thing either. I usually avoid those types of books. Though I did preorder Courtney Summer's new book, This Is Not a Test. But that wasn't because it had zombie's in it. That's because someone said it was a sexy read, and I love Courtney's books.

Today's breakfast is a boring Fiber One Bar, and lots of coffee. Sorry, ate too much last night. Trying to make up for it today..but I'm making my kids waffles, fruit and turkey sausage! And I taught them to share!

My Brother-in-Law and my nieces are obsesssed with Zombies! I don't get it either Katie, but they do this huge Zombie walk every year here in NJ and get all dressed up and made-up like zombies. They do a fabulous job at looking gross!

"Zombies are mindless decaying corpses who feed off people’s brains and infect them." That's just hilarious - and that's the attraction for me. Zombies make me giggle.

I bring overpriced flavored coffee - gotta get energized just in case we need to run (or just walk quickly) from the living dead.

'K, I think of zombies a little differently - like that's any surprise. I see beyond the flaking skin and odd choice of diet. They suffer from an inner longing, a need. Now, when using a zombie in a story (which I've yet to do), that need can be anything - superficial like some badars makeup to hide the decay, or something more serious like the need to feel included. Did you just get that 'I want to give a hug to a lonely zombie feeling?'

I'll bring some crumbled coffee cake in the spirit of fake brains and honor a zombie.

I'm bringing some darjeeling tea for the non-coffee drinkers (if any such creatures exist in the writing/blogging world!).

The zombie fascination boggles my mind, too. Though to be perfectly honest, I've never really understood the lure of vampires, either. Everything else aside, they're still not-living, which, just ... ew.

I'm SO boring.

Watching a zombie show is like riding a roller coaster. It scares the shit of you for one. Peeps like to be scared. It pumps up endorfins and the adrenilin.

Anyway, The Walking Dead is very well-written. It's not just about zombies but about live peeps with real problems. Like who's the baby's daddy? Who's really wearing the pants around here? The women of the men?

Yeah. Stuff like that.

I've brought bacon (and melon for my veggie friends).

I don't get the zombie thing either. However, two of my kids love the craze. So I've watched an episode of The Walking Dead, which was much better than I thought it would be.

(My 18 year old son also made a zombie game, and we're having lots of fun playing it.)

I guess it's the disease and end-of-world factor, something that could wipe us out quickly.

I read an article by a psychologist once who said that zombies are used in entertainment to represent xenophobia.

In other words, if you see society as zombies, it means you see a world lacking morals, reason, order, a soul...

I don't know about that, but I've never liked zombies. I like bad guys who are clever (more clever than the good guys!), challenging, and look like I would in a fantasy.

If I want to feel mindless and rotting, why would I need to turn to books or movies?

I'm bringing vegetarian sausages to go with fried tomatoes and toast!

I like zombies - cos they are the ultimate amoral creatures aren't they? Totally uncomplicated. They have to eat, full stop. LOL!

Take care

I was just converted into a Walking Dead fan over spring break and can't wait for next season!

And I recently bought a zombie book on my Kindle that I now regret purchasing. Blech. Making late night purchases on my Kindle rarely works out. Good thing it was only $1.99 or something like that.

First vampires, then zombies. What's next? Mummies? Let's get a jump on that and co-author the first big hit YA MUMMY novel!

I'm bringing oven-baked turkey bacon for today's bloffee.

As for zombies, I'm learning more and more beyond the typical walking, brain hungry typecast. Because of that, I've been considering zombies lately, even have a sorta zombie group in one of my WiPs. Like many things, zombies can be what you choose to make of them...within the realms of suspension of disbelief.

I'm bringing Diet Coke and have already been snacking on cinnamon bears before eating breakfast. Whatever.

I don't get zombies, HOWEVER, Carrie Ryan's trilogy is amazing. I don't know that I could get into the zombie movies, but these books are a must read.

I've brought porridge with a banana and some linseeds in it and a cup of tea, milk, no sugar.
When I was a kid I was always afraid of everybody else in the world suddenly turning against me. That's part of the fascination with zombies I think. There are loads of them so essentially they are the normal ones while the few living people are the freaks. It's a bit like I Am Legend (the book, not that Will Smith load of crap). The hero realises at the end that he has become the monster.
Right, I off the pester Angela, Tasha and Louise.

LOL I'm working on a zombie fairy tale for a call for submissions. Zombies are everywhere!

I'm bringing brains to breakfast (nom nom nom), but I already know all these people. Dang it.

I'm bringing a sausage egg sandwich, a giant glass of OJ and my iron pills....lovely. Anyone want one?

I don't get the zombie thing either. I watched the entire season of The Walking Dead. My husband was obsessed. Every single episode grossed me out... I really wanted to get absorbed in the storyline and be one of the cool kids, but I found myself instead finding distractions (usually my computer) during each zombie fight to the point where the usual drama that would hook me (best friends fight over pregnant woman) did nothing for me.

I must admit though...for all of you zombie lovers and writers, my seventh grade students LOVE them - can't read enough books about them.

DL Hammons said...

I showed up empty handed, and hungry, so I'm taking Kimberly up on her offer (for a sausage egg sandwhich...not the iron pill).

I'm a Walking Dead fan, although there are times when they have the characters do REALLY stupid things! I'm not a fan of zombies in literature however. The thing is with zombies, the real protagonists are the people and the way they respond to the situations.

I cheated this morning. Just brought some fruit and yogurt parfaits from McD's.

Not into Zombies. At all. But my son's family loves them. My daughter-in-law even has a bumper sticker: MY ZOMBIE ATE YOUR HONOR STUDENT.

I do point out to her that both her children (my exception grandchildren) happen to BE honor students.

Biscuits.

Cuz that's how I roll.

I'm on board with the rise of the zombie phenomenon. It's not about fear, or scariness, but about chaos and disorder and the crumbling of society.

Something I think we all look forward to, right?

zerg, I missed breakfast, sorry. But I don't know! What IS up w/all the Zombie love these days? It's crazy. I just threw that on my post Monday, and it seemed like *kerblewy* off the radar craziness.

I'm in your teepee w/the Zombies are NOT sexy. I find them repellent, but I really liked that movie Zombieland. Hmm... I don't know. Have a great weekend! :o) <3

I totally missed b-fast, so I bring some Lindt Hazelnut truffles to atone for my tardiness.

I dig all kinds of supernatural monsters, including zombies, because they're just so implausible*. Reality is filled with actual terrors we can't control and, sometimes, can't defend against. But pretty much every supernatural creature has at least one weakness which, if we're careful and clever enough, we can exploit to our benefit. In real life, our problems can't always be solved (if they can be solved at all), no matter what we do.

*That is, I'd believed zombies were implausible, till the recent spate of "zombie apocalypse" news stories over the past few weeks. Made me think about re-reading Max Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide. Word to the wise - according to Max, the machete is the weapon of choice when dealing with the shambling dead. :-)

I brought a crapload of coffee because I need it.

One thing about zombies is that it brings the surviving people together in a desperate fight for survival, and that usually makes for good stories.
