When the Snow Won't Come to You...

You go to the snow! Or at least, that’s what I told myself when the family and I began our trek out to the Vosges Mountains, in eastern France last week. While the United States has gotten their fair share of snowfall this season, we poor folk over here in middle Europe haven’t had diddlysquat. Not a single flake!

So we decided to take a ski *ahem* vacation.

To be honest, very little skiing was actually done. Besides my husband, none of us have ever skied. The girls, however, had their first lesson with a professional instructor and we had a great time sledding and snowshoe hiking for the most part.

And yet, after all the non-skiing, my six-year-old Lucy still managed to come home with a cast when she twisted/broke her ankle walking (running) on the cobblestone streets (after the pigeons).

Our visit to Strasbourg was otherwise the highlight of our vacation- what a beautiful, peaceful, pleasant city! I officially want to live there.

And I suppose, in her own way, Lucy enjoyed it, too. She had been pretty high on life all day- running, skipping, and walking into things just for the hell of it (as featured in the photo below).

And after she snapped her ankle, not only did she continue to walk around as though nothing was wrong, but she also tried to convince her father to climb the 330 steps up to the top of Strasbourg’s Notre Dame Cathedral! (he refused, thank goodness)

It wasn’t until we were all seated in the car that I saw her ankle had swollen to twice its normal size. #parentfail

So here I am, back after a not-so-bad vacation, but also thankful that school is in session again and I’ll have a routine that involves a little more time to relax and work on my writing. It’s been slow going, with all of the interruptions but I’m hoping to hit the gas pedal and still finish this thing before summer vacation!

Have any of you ever broken a bone? Or had the trying task of keeping a crazy kid from hurting themselves?

I can't believe your daughter got injured on cobblestones instead of skiing!

My son was always climbing everything. I'm surprised he didn't break anything when he was little.

Sorry Lucy is in a cast. My daughter never broke a bone.

Wish I could send some of our snow your way. We're super sick of it and the cold weather.

Sorry your vacation ended like that but it sounds like a great place to visit. Hope she heals fast!

First, I haven't been here in forever and I LOVE the new picture header. Made me giggle!

Second, I'm sorry we've been hogging all the snow. I'd send you one of those fire fighting planes filled with snow (instead of water or fire retardant) if I could....in fact, I would volunteer to give up every single flake in my yard.

I have a surprise for you! I just loaded a huge cooler with buckets of Maine snow. I'll mail it soon. ;)

So sorry for the broken bone in the little one! There is nothing worse than having a child suffer. (But it doesn't sound like she let it slow her done. LOL) Yup, between my four kiddos, I've lost count at the broken bones. Remember, three of my four are boys.

Glad you got to enjoy some snow, although bummer your daughter broke her ankle. She's probably proudly showing off her cast to the other kids at school right now.

Love the photo of Lucy walking into a sign - eek! I've broken bones and it seems like I'm constantly trying to stop my son from injuring himself.

Strasbourg looks beautiful! And I'm glad you had fun on your vacation even after Lucy broke her ankle (poor thing)! I'm not sure either one of my daughters would have been that stoic after an injury!

I tore my ACL while skiing on my honeymoon. Imagine the jokes of my co-workers when I returned from my honeymoon wearing a hip-to-ankle leg brace!

Love the photo of you strolling the baby, and your daughter hitting the sign (good it was paper-ish). We have had snow on the west coast of Canada, too, but not as much as other locales.

Thanks for showing us the cathedral, I love architecture. Hope your child's ankle heals well, and quickly.

My youngest daughter was always an accident waiting to happen... she could trip over fresh air! People often come back from ski resorts in cast, but how ironic that it happened when she was nowhere near the snow! Lucy sounds a lot of fun :-) JJ

It sounds like a wonderful trip, even with the broken ankle. I've never broken a bone. I major in the minor injuries.

We're getting sleet and snow tonight - want some?

Wow, Strasbourg! I can't even imagine it! Must be like a fairy tail, or something. So lucky you only need a short trip to get there.

Broken ankle aside, seems all went well. That pic of your little one running into that sign thingie is just classic. Definitely have to keep that to show when she gets older.

I'm sorry your daughter got hurt; I hope she gets better soon! It sounds like she had a positive attitude about it anyway, though. And hey, if you want more snow, feel free to take the snow here in Chicago. Summer can't come soon enough.
