Finishing the First Draft

I'm about two scenes away from finishing the first draft of my YA contemporary romance and to tell you the truth, I'm putting it off.

I've been writing like a mad woman for the last two weeks because come Monday, it's back to work and I know I won't have a much time to put towards it.

But now that I'm down to the drawing line I'm starting to get that 'feeling.'  You know what I'm saying?  That feeling that comes when you know you're about to write the last line of the last paragraph and you get this rush of 'woah, I just created something.  From start to finish.  I have a whole book on my hands now.'  It's intense.  And you're the only one in your own little universe that sees the enormity of it.

So, that's where I'm at today.  I've been putting a lot of thought into these last two scenes.  They probably won't take me much more than a couple hours to write, but I want them to be as close to perfect as I can get them.  And then I'll probably put it away for a while (yeah right).

I hope everybody has a great Wednesday!

Good for you! I'm envious, it'll be months yet before I am that close. Well,if I follow the planned path anyhow. I could end it all right now if I wanted to - I have that kind of power, hahahaha.

Have an excellent Wednesday yourself!

How fabulous!!! Keep it up! I can't wait to hear that you've finished it, especially being so close!

I remember when I finished, I didn't even know it was coming and then all of the sudden "WHAM!" done. An amazing journey, good luck!

I understand! Writing is so much fun, I hate it when the first draft ends! I'm only at 11,000 words so I have a ways to go. Good luck with those last 2!

That is awesome. Congratulations. There is nothing quite like that feeling. I rode the high for a couple of weeks before I realized my MS was WAY too long. I'm still quite proud of it though.

Wow - I think it's so great that you're two scenes away from completing your manuscript. I actually can't wait until I can say the same. Enjoy writing those last scenes then celebrate like crazy!

Congrats on almost finishing the first draft. That's the draft I like the least.

And good luck with giving it space. That's the part I have the most trouble with. I can't wait to revisit my characters. :)

I know exactly what you mean!! I kept coming up with reasons to avoid finishing. But it was actually good to step away. When I went back to it, the words just flowed.

I think it´s good to let the story sink in a bit. After long pauses away from my book, it´s always easier to edit it =)
So you go girl! And congrats on the finished revision!

Actually finishing that first draft (even if it's total baloney - not that yours is, I was talking about mine. Honest) is so outrageous. I mean, everyone wants to write the next great novel, but so few people actually finish a draft! Enjoy it!

Woo! Way to go! I was at the point last week. It took me two days to finish two paragraphs (I know, sad). I'm so excited for you! =)

This is such cool news! I'm thrilled for you, and hope that you get enough rest to come back and kill that last scene!

Sending tons of well wishes your way!

Thanks so much everybody! It's done! It topped out at about 50k- which is funny because my first novel was almost triple that and I had to trim it down. Now I feel like i'm going to have to go back and fluff it up since I didn't do much with description. It's a great feeling! But true that I'm having trouble staying away from it. I'm sorry I won't be able to do much commenting today- I've got my french driving exam coming up friday morning and I've been out almost all day but I'll do my best! Thanks guys!

Oh my gosh, about two months ago I could have written this exact same entry. I knew I was getting close to the end of my novel. I could see it coming, I knew how it would happen, and I know what to write. But I hesitated. I put it off. I took a break and worked on something else. And then, finally, I went and pushed through and ENDED it. It's a weird jumble of emotion, isn't it, when you get to the end of something you've put that much time, energy, and emotion into. Then you want to go and do a little dance.

Congratulations.

I completely understand. When I typed "The End" on my first book, I cried for two days - much to the bewilderment and dismay of everyone around me. It IS an emotional moment and you should feel emotional. But also, much pride. So many people *want* to write a book - so few make it to "The End." Congrats on this awesome achievement.

Allow yourself to cry. Then celebrate. Cheers.
