My bologna (pronounced Baloni- why? No one knows) has a first name.
It’s O-S-C-A-R.
My bologna has a second name.
It’s M-A-Y-E-R.
I like to eat it every day.
And if you ask me why I’ll saaaay.
That Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A.
*sigh* --A flagrant example of how so few words can make such an impact.
The Bologna song.
Short.
Sweet.
Educative (I mean, it teaches kids how to spell Oscar Mayer, and Bologna- a much needed and valued capacity in today’s society)
and, most importantly it has withstood the test of time.
So, as you can imagine, I am outraged, I mean O-U-T-R-A-G-E-D that Daniel Bedingfield, the author of this little priceless piece of history, does not have his own Wikipedia the free encyclopedia page. We should start a petition.
P.S.- I did God or Google why we pronounce it 'baloni' in the U.S. and all I could come up with is that the Americans thought it sounded tastier. The real pronounciation is Balon-y-a. Like the town in Italy.
OH! and yes, in case you were wondering- the above blog post is what you get when Katie runs out of writerly topics to discuss. lol.
Have a great Monday!

Okay, your last comment cracked me up! Have a great day, Katie!
part of the genius of the wikipedia is, of course, your ability to create the wikipedia page for mr. bedingfield.
(i am curious, however, to know how you know to ascribe authorship of this timeless little ditty to mr. bedingfield)
-- Tom
perhaps Mr. Bedingfield got so well-paid that he got all Howard Hughs and secluded.
Bologna was seriously a spelling word for my third grade daughter a few months ago. So I went to youtube and showed her the commercial and that girl will never forget the spelling of bologna!
LOL! I've got another name for it -mortadella!
I have always been suspicious of bologna and generally avoid it. No meat should be that uniformly pink or smooth.
I used to sing that song to my son all the time! And once he learned it he would sing "My-my-and-r" and "bowl-a-gene-and-a" instead of the correct spelling. It was just too darn cute to correct him!
Short, sweet, educative and enduring...we should all be so lucky as writers, Wikipedia entry or no:).
I LOVE bologna and I LOVE the bologna song!!! :-)
Hilarious! This took me back. Thanks for the smile. So true, we want to make our words memorable. (Hugs)Indigo
LOL Sometimes the fun posts are the best ones!
You can actually add your own Wikipedia page. They usually get erased it there's no merit...but if he's published and wants to upload a picture...he can. Just FYI.
Edge of Your Seat Romance
I also vote you write the wiki page for it. You would definitely do him justice! And now...that song is stuck in my head. We used to like to see how fast we could end it...*sigh* good stuff. ALSO, it really does sound tastier but do you think it's just because we now associate it that way or because it really, truly does sound yummier?
LOL! Love it!!!! Can you imagine your 3 year-old kid coming up to you...."Mom, I'd like a ba-lon-ya sandwich, please?"
Every member of our family has their own balogna-song lyrics. Yes, I take all the credit/blame. My kid's most requested version is the one for their dad:
My Daddy has a first name, it's D-A-D-D-Y
My Daddy has a second name, it's B-U-R-P
Oh, I love to see him every day, and if you'll ask me why I'll say,
'Cause Daddy (belch) has a way of brightening up our every day.
I remember watching a Frasier episode where there was a running gag about Oscar Meyer. Being in the UK the joke fell flat cos I didn't know what on earth the joke was about but the live studio audience loved it. It's only many years later that I realised why the joke was so funny.
There endeth my only Oscar Meyer related anectode. Ahem.
Take care
x
Oh Oscar Meyer, how I miss thee! :)
Thanks for the laugh. Happy Monday!
And yet your blog is so insightful. Better to say more with less than to less with more. :)
How about lasagne -- which is pronounced Lasagna? And what about catsup -- which was pronounced ketchup until they finally gave up and changed the spelling?
And Worcester Sauce?
English is weird, especially when we start mangling foreign words. There is a town in New Jersey named Buena that the residents pronounce Byooo-na.
And I can still sing the ingredients of a Big Mac, can you?
Good example of how sharp, concise writing can stick with a person.
*sighs* now I'll have that song stuck in my head all day.
......dhole
Too funny, and I'll probably be singing it for the rest of the day. (Thanks alot.)
Recently I signed up for the A to Z Challenge and saw your blog listed so I stopped by to say "Hi".
I look forward to reading your alphabet post. (Oops, you used up your "B".)
I was TOTALLY singing this song (out loud) this weekend. I didn't know why at the time, but apparently I was channeling your thoughts without realizing it.
If you'd like to stop me from revealing those *other* thoughts of yours to the blogosphere, you'll see to it that there's some yummy chocolate in my mailbox soon....
;)
I always say, at least be entertaining. :D I agree, too. Why do we pronounce it balogni? Seriously?
Also, I want to know. Am I the only one who thinks the girl on the cover of the Liar's Society book looks like Jenna Malone??? Am I? I see Jenna Malone every time...
It's a good thing. :D <3
You should totally write his wiki page! And Baloni sounds a lot yummier than Balon-y-a.
This song is stuck in my head as is:
Oh I wish I were an oscar meyer wiener...
Thanks...thanks. :)
my blog friend has a first name
Its K-A-T-I-E
my blog friend has a second name
its M-I-L-L-S
i visit her most every day
and if you ask me why youll see
katie has a way with B-L-O-G-I-N-G
...hugs from lenny
When I was young and on my own, we used to love a fried bologna sandwiches with mayonnaise. We were poor.
I used to love the stuff when I was a kid. Now I'll eat it fried... occasionally. The song I sing all the time and at inappropriate times though.
