Lightbulb!!

I want to thank everyone for their kind words and encouragement last Wednesday when I confided I was totally slumpin’ it on the writing front.

You gave me the motivation to rise, dust myself off, re-open that word document and write a whole page !  (baby steps okay ?)

However, something amazing happened to me this weekend.

I had an idea for a new book.

I’ve been waiting for this for awhile now.  It seems like ever since I finished my third, I’ve just been flopping around like a fish out of water, hoping for inspiration.  When it didn’t come, I tried to force it.  My now-four-page wip is based on an idea I’ve had on the shelf for years and even though I think it’s a good idea and it could make a great book- it’s a darker, more drawn out, complicated paranormal romance.  (Needs major brain power, of which I am currently running low)

My new idea is for a funny YA contemporary romance and it’s just coming to me- scene after scene.  I have a title, the blurb is written, the first page complete and I can’t wait to completely jump into it.

Have you ever gotten an idea that had you chomping at the bit (- first time I’ve ever used this expression ever, I swear) to sit down and write after a monumental slump?  Why do you think certain projects tempt us more than others at a certain time?

I've been trying to find the right dominant idea to get going on myself. I finally think I have it - after not looking. Now, I feel like I'm almost ready to get going on it. I'm not "chomping at the bit" yet but when I am, I'll start writing hardcore.

Awesome! Sometimes we just have to dither around until the awesome idea that beats out all other ideas plops into our laps! Go for it!

I'm so happy for you! What a great feeling. I always find it such a relief to have an idea I can pursue, because I pretty much live with the fear that every idea I have will be my last.

I was actually feeling just like you were last Wednesday and then on Friday got this amazing idea. I think they come to us when we need it the most, to remind us that we are indeed writers and we may have many moments of doubts but when the ideas come we know it's rubbish and move on.

I love new ideas and they seem to always override what I'm doing. Right now I've written the ideas down and told myself line edits (at least a chapter) come first... then I can have fun.

It's like I'm a kid... I'm going to give myself a time-out if I don't listen.

This just happened to me too. A book I had been vaguely mulling over for a couple years suddenly came through. I dared to write the first couple paragraphs and it hit the mark. I've been working on it solidly for a month and a half now. Congrats on the new idea, that's great!

I'm so glad you got out of that slump :D Having a page written is a gigantic leap in the right direction after a slumpy time. Congrats!

I'm not sure why some ideas come to me and nag at me to be written. I don't know why some of them just write themselves. I think it may just be where I'm at in my life and I do think my characters reflect that (in a totally paranormal way)

glad to hear you're outta the slump! Write on!

I'm SO jealous of all you idea people. I've only ever had the one, and I'm pretty sure it's the only one I'll ever have.

Still, good for you!

I’m a bucket of ideas so they come at me all the time. Over this weekend alone I came up with three new ideas, and a storyline for an idea I’ve been playing with for a while. Half the time, to keep my ideas organized, I write them down and store them in my “idea box”.

Good luck on your new idea. I hope it’s everything you want it to be and the perfect fit for some publisher.

I think different projects tempt us at different times because that's the project that is right for us at that particular time. You know what I mean?

That's so exciting that you broke through your slump and are getting ready to go, go, go on this one!

Great that you broke out of your slump. I love those ideas that breaks the down periods. I've got several rattling around in my head at the moment that I'm anxious to get started with.

Good luck with the new idea.

Congrats on your new idea! I love it when I'm in the zone (which I'm currently not in, but anyways). Go for it!

Yeah! Congratulations on your shiny new arrival ;) I hope the pages continue to mount.

I've had some ideas I've been really excited about, but they always seem to give me trouble starting out. Of course, I can't seem to find the time to concentrate on any one project right now -- darn that day job. And every time I actually get rolling, I have to go back and revise some previous project for one reason or another. Feeling highly frustrated right now. :(

I'd have to say, after a monumental slump, it's reading that gets me back into writing, not a new idea. Usually, at least. :)
I'm so glad you feel inspired again!! Congrats!

I've been in a terrible slump of circumstances conspiring to keep me away from my writing. Plus writing a historical piece is slow going.

Here's to getting over slumps! I hope the crest of mine is coming soon.

I wasn't in a slump when the idea for my current WIP hit me a year ago. I had just finished outlining a new YA contemp novel (my upcoming project) and was working on the major edits for another one (which I'm now querying). I think that was the best situation. Like you said, Katie. It didn't come to me because I was forcing it. Quite the opposite. Same deal with the other outline. :D

April Plummer said...

Absolutely! That seems to happen to me, more often than not, actually. It's during those slumps that I get ideas which makes it harder than ever to go back to the original piece. That's partially why I have a bunch of unfinished manuscripts. (Unfortunately, I failed to back many of them up and have lost them as a result of my foolishness, but that is beside the point)

I'm glad you go in another page, and I'm really glad you've got another idea (and a good one, I might add!)

I love getting new ideas after a slump. Sometimes I can feel that my idea is utterly unique and I can totally create a plot around it.

I'm so glad you have a new idea! I've been cheating with a few myself, briefly, of course.

I had been in a slump for a while with you, but last night I got my ms out for the first time in a few weeks and did some work. It felt great!

I'm glad your idea's are flowing again and it's great to hear your enthusiasm for your new book. Long may it continue!
