Raindrops on Roses

What ‘makes’ inspiration for you?  Is it a muse?  A person?  A place?  Or just the magic within, pure and simple?
For me, there’s a moment, right before a storm when the air is heavy with electricity and your heart beats faster, your instincts telling you something is about to happen.  All your senses are on high when mother nature gives you a heads up- something inside you rises to the occasion.  That feeling, the one where you feel like something huge is about to happen, something you don’t witness every day, something magical- for me that’s inspiration.  The feeling that anything is possible, any world, any story.

And then there are places that feel as though an entire tale is laid out for you already, just waiting to be told.  Everything about it has you wondering who walked these steps before you, what problems they might have had, who they were running from or who they were running to and what became of them-  It has you building ideas and outcomes in your head until you have no other choice but to spill them out and give that place a story.

What ‘makes’ inspiration for you?

That's such a great way of describing it! I totally agree with both of these--that's where it starts. Thanks for putting it into words!

Right now it is "Rain Drops On Roses". We have had measurable rain in months and it is pouring.

Mind come when I least expect it. I get a lot of inspiration from listening to music.

Awwwwww!! Your inspirations are so evocative and very moving! How lovely! Thanks for sharing! Gosh, I guess mine would be people watching. There'll something about a person or a couple or a group or I'll overhear a snippet of conversation and then I find myself making up stories about them. Take care

Your inspiration is all fairy tale like. Mine usually comes from watching people and watching TV. My favorite past times!

I don't get the 'all things possible' kind so much, but have those... lightbulb moments that are like 'oh!'. You know how some of those obstacle illusions you see only one thing, then suddenly see the OTHER, and can't go back to not seeing it... It's like that.

I can get crazy inspired when I run in the fall on one of those perfect sunny mornings with the leaves crunching under my feet. It's kind of the perfect combo.

I LOVE those descriptions! That is exactly how Shiny New Ideas come to me!

And then, when I sit down to think about them some more ... uh, they are not always so shiny.

What wonderful inspirations. The pictures alone do it for me.

I find inspiration can come in the most unexpected places: in a car on a long drive; at the store when I see something unusual that makes me think hmmm, what if; or in my dreams.

Inspiration can strike anywhere any time.

It may seem silly, but I love grey days. You know, those days when everyone else fears dreary and drab, yearning for the sun that was just there the day before, causing them to bitch endlessly about the heat.

Yeah, I can write whenever. And I have to. But on those grey days, when the clouds are low and the coffee is hot...things seem perfect for writing. A slight drizzle is optional, but preferred.

I like watching clouds for inspiration. Makes me feel like a kid again, every time.

For me inspiration for new work comes to me when I am in that place between sleep and wakefulness. Those are the times that things become crystal clear or a new idea jumps out at me. I love how clearly I can see things when my mind is almost but not quite shut off.

I find a lot of inspiration when I read other books or watch movies. It's not the situations themselves, but more the feelings they leave me with, and then I wonder how I could weave my own story to make a reader feel those same feelngs.

Oh I love that just-before-a-storm feeling!
As for inspiration - who knows where it comes from - sometimes it feels like it's sliding into my head from somewhere else!

I'm inspired by many things: photos, paintings, songs. I also get inspiration from going out on long walks by the water.

Great topic CQG.

Like other readers, my inspirations are diverse. I would add that reading a writer's original thoughts in a journal or letter from history is one that can inspire me--seeing the similarities and differences despite it being from decades or centuries ago.
