Misfits

If you’re like me and waiting for your favorite summer series to start up (True Blood, anyone?)- I found a series that might bide your time. A freak storm bestows supernatural powers on a whole population of Southeast Londoners, including five adolescent delinquents who were performing community service together at the time.

Once you get past the various English/Irish accents- (seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a British show where all the characters share the same regional accent. It would make sense, because they’re all supposed to be from the same place, but no. It really gives the impression that no two English speak alike. – Like everybody just makes up their own accents as a general rule.) One girl in particular is really difficult to understand (I think it sounds like a mix between a mouthful of marbles, Chinese intonation, and chronic hiccups) but you get used to it.

The show kind of reminds me of a younger, hipper, darker ‘HEROES’ with a lot of English slang. And after a few episodes, I was hooked.

What summer series are you guys looking forward to – books or television? And happy Memorial Day! It's hard to celebrate from across the pond but the outpouring of love and support on the social network sites for real-life heroes (here and gone) makes me feel like I'm right back home.

I've now heard about this show from a few different people, and I'll have to check it out!

I've never heard of it, but the only TV I watch (other than the news) is Criminal Minds (from the DVDs of seasons past). Any shows I'd watch, tend not to be suitable for my kids, and they always put the shows on when my kids are around. :(

Lol, as a Brit I am smiling. My accent is always mistaken as Australian, even by other Brits!

Not heard of this show, will check it out.

I'm not sure I can get that show where we are, but it sounds like something I'd enjoy. My favorite summer series (recently) is The Closer and Suits, but now that I'm about to dive into writing another novel, they'll probably be relegated to the DVR until I have time for them. :)

The clip won't play but I think the actress is from Derby ("up north!" LOL!) and she's going for the south london accent for some reason!

I watched series 1 then sort of lost track (kind of like Heroes!) - but it was fun! Take care

I don't watch much TV but am thinking of trying True Blood this season. Looking for other good recommendations.

The rest of us in the world manage to understand American accents so I don't see what the big problem is for Americans to understand any accent different to their own.

I guess maybe because the rest of the world has a lot more exposure to American accents? And Americans really don't have much exposure to any other accent but their own in most cases, unfortunately. It's rare for a British show to make it into the mainstream over there. Personally, I find the variety of accents in England completely fascinating. But yeah, there are times when I have to pay very close attention, read lips and repeat the phrase a few times myself to figure it out:)

I'll have to check Mistfits out. We're waiting for Leverage, Burn Notice, and Falling Skies. In the meantime, we're discovered Flashpoint on Netflix and we're loving it. (Though I do cry some times.)

I'm actually turning my tv off, or at least the service that pays for the satellite. I'll have to rely on netflix. At least until The Walking Dead come back...

Haven't watched it. And I live in the South - I get to hear mouthful of marbles but without a cool British accent all the time.

That sounds amazingly cool! And I loved Heroes--at least the first season! Ahh, as for accents, I remember having the hardest time figuring out what they were saying in The Full Monty--LOL! That had never happened to me before.

Yay! Happy summer~ :o) <3

True Blood is my most favorite. I am terribly in pain Dr Houses ended, I also love Grey's Anatomy and Game of Thrones. And I also like ..you :).

I am ludicrously excited to see someone else is watching this bad ass show. Just wait until you hit season 2, episode three. :D Some of the story arcs for these characters are amazing . . .

I watched the first half dozen episodes of this - mostly because I like the main kid. The accents sounded pretty much like the town I lived in when I was there. It's the more realistic variety - as opposed to the ones we watch in other countries where everyone sounds posh. #nottrue :D

I haven't heard of this. I brought home lots of books from my school library to fly through over the summer. I plan to read, read, read. However, in the meantime, I am currently ridiculously addicted to NCIS. TV stations have been accommodating with marathons.

I'm not sure there is any such thing as a British accent.

I think it's like gay guys and African-Americans: Just a way that they pretend to talk when other folks are listening.

Only gay people and African-Americans are better at quality control, I guess.

I'm looking forward to "Breaking Bad" myself. Sure, it's about drug manufacturers, but at least they talk like normal people...

HA! Excellent! I often stream Netflix in the background at work and when you do that day in and day out, you can run out of shows fast. I've been curious about this one, so I'm glad to hear it's good.

I think in the cities, the mix of accents is really profound, as people come from all over the UK to work in, say London. I've definitely noticed similar though--I watch a lot of BBC programming.

Funny about the accents! It's true, though, that there are SO MANY accents, even in London. As soon as someone opens their mouth, I can tell if they've been born in South or East London, the accent is that distinctive. And that's just in the city!
