School Year's Resolutions

If you’re a parent like me, you may find yourself making resolutions based on the upcoming school year rather than the January 1st  holiday.  September through July is a pretty decent amount of time to set and meet goals over, after all.

This year my school year’s resolutions are:

To file for French citizenship. I thought getting my French driver’s license was hard. But that was nothing compared to the amount of money and paper work that goes into filing for citizenship.  For instance, I just found out that starting January 2012, I need to take a (80 euro fee) test to prove I speak French well enough to be considered before I can file.  Lovely. And all documents have to be translated (fees for that too) and issued less than three months ago. *sigh*

Find a job. My teaching contract was up in April and there’s no guarantee I’ll have a new one this October. Thankfully, I’m still covered financially by the Education Dept’s unemployment until I find something.

Finish writing and revising my current wip in time to start something new for Nanowrimo in November. That’s right. I’m going to attempt that beast again even though last year’s results were dismal.

Find an agent.  Duh. :)

What are your school year’s resolutions?

All great resolutions. I'm just hoping to get my kids through another year, and get a couple of books written during that process, on top of my full time job. Ugh.

My kids are grown and I don't have to worry about school.

Currently, I'm doing the Camp NaNo Wri Mo. I'm at 24,133 words. Planning to finish. Let it sit for 30 days and then go through it a 1000 times.

Hugs,
Shelly

You have to prove you speak French well? That's tough.

My goals are: to rediscover some of the joy of teaching I lost last school year, not to let my blood boil during faculty meetings, and to survive having one daughter in high school and the other in middle school.

Awesome goals! I too like the idea of starting resolutions/goals with the school year (or starting the school year in January, either way). It just makes more sense. My school-year-goals are:

Publish short story collection. Get in a complete year of homeschooling my kindergartner without losing my mind. Finish my novel and explore publishing options.

I think that's plenty to keep me occupied until next July!

My goals are basic. I'd just like to be able to get my three girls all showered, dressed, hair done, and breakfast eaten without any fighting, so we can actually make it to school on time. :O

I don't make resolutions anymore. Yeah, I know, that's probably not wise. How does one make any progress in one's life without goals?

I should probably pull myself up a bit harder by the bootstraps. This September, however, my kids will all be in school full day. So that will free up time.

Maybe I'll look for a job that involves something different than changing diapers and kissing boo boos.

Quite a list! Good luck with citizenship!

My 17 year old starts college this Wednesday. This year he will be attending and living at home. Next year he transfers and will be in the dorm.

I'm looking forward to the quiet time without a houseful of teens underfoot. And writing time. I'm setting up a blog tour for a friend of mine's debut novel for next spring. Oh, and I'm back to work (from my home office) 15 hours a week, after being off two years, on top of it all.

I have no back to school resolutions, but wanted to tell you good luck with NaNoWriMo!

My writing cycle seems to go from summer to summer, so by the time Nano usually gets here I'm taking a break between drafts. I always feel left out!

Well, for this school year, my kid's in college so what I need to do is focus on me again (after many years of not doing so). It's freeing! And frightening! But mostly freeing! :-)

Good luck to you with your citizenship application!!!

I'll join you in the quest to find an agent.

Never been one for resolutions. I prefer to decide what I want/need to do and then just do it. Sometimes it works, sometimes not :)

I wonder how the French citizenship process compares to Canada? I can still remember the pile of paperwork and the hundreds of $$ in fees, and it took nearly two years from application to citizenship!

P.S. Meant to say - good luck with all of them!

Lucky that the Education Department covers you like that. Good luck in finding a new job!

I'm not very good with resolutions, but I do want to devote more time to my writing - it seems to have taken something of a back seat this year, which isn't good :(.

I worked in a college for years, so for me September is the new year - and in July we always had a huge end of term night out, and August was a void.

Good luck with your resolutions!

Good luck with the Citizenship application.

September resolutions: start something new (writing); keep submitting.

Good luck on all of your resolutions, especially learning French. I tried studying French by taking a class on it in college, but it was too hard because I was studying Spanish at the same time; the languages are similar to each other, so I kept getting mixed up.
My resolution is to stop procrastinating so much and make more progress on my dissertation. Once I do, it'll feel like a giant weight's been lifted off my shoulders.
