Ding Dong My Kindle is Dead

So, yesterday, I FINALLY finished the initial draft of edits for project Agent Revise & Resubmit.  These last two months of revision have been long and hard, with various interruptions and hair-pulling moments. So I can’t tell you how relieved I was to finally have the bulk of my efforts over with. Naturally, the first thing I did was contact a few beta readers in hopes of getting an outside take.

The second thing I did was look for my Kindle. Oh yes. I was oh-so-ready to enjoy one of the numerous books off my to-be-read list and get lost in somebody else’s story for a change.

Alas, when I grabbed my kindle from its place on the bookshelf, I knew something was amiss. The screen was blocked on an audio book page I don’t remember opening and there was an overlaying message:

‘Collecting information.  May take a min.. Will restart when done.. Please wait..’

Those were- *sniff*- the last words my kindle ever uttered.

I tried CPR, mouth-to-mouth, and electric pads.

Nothing.

My kindle wouldn’t reboot, turn on, charge, or change screens. And the computer wouldn’t even register anything was plugged into the usb.

She totally flatlined.

I put out a cry for help on facebook and thankfully, my dear friend Dianne Salerni advised me to call kindle 911.

After trying everything the tech support advisor asked me to do, he regretfully declared my kindle ‘dead on arrival’.  And told me I’d have to package her up and send her through the valley of the shadows of death, all the way back to the Amazon Returns Center.

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Since this is apparently a battery-charging defect issue, Amazon is sending me a replacement kindle, free of charge:) So, as much as I’m going to miss my ole’ ereader (we really have been through so many great stories together), all is not lost!

Have you ever had a problem with your kindle or ereader? Was your provider as helpful as you’d hoped? (In my case, I was totally flabbergasted when he told me they’d be sending a replacement.)

The first time my Kobo went glitchy, they sent me a replacement. I was happy with their customer service. (Also have been pleased with customer service at the Kobobooks website.)

But when my daughter's Kobo went glitchy, they were less helpful, and now her Kobo is dead and I didn't bother contacting customer support. It was a low-end early model and I've read online that when the screen goes (her current issue) they don't cover that.

Yes. Mine died over the summer. They said I must have damaged my screen somehow, so I paid half price for my next one.

That's terrific you finished your revisions! Best of luck!

Awesome you finished your revisions. I don't have a Kindle. Someone just gave me their old Nook. I just read my first book on it. Awesome that you're getting a replacement Kindle for free.

Congratulations on finishing your edits!
Sorry about your Kindle, but at least they are sending a free replacement. Not had a problem with any of my iPads, but I always back up my current one once a week, just in case.

Great info about the batteries going wacky in the Kindles. So glad they're sending you another one.

Major WHOOT! for finishing up those revisions. I'm thinking about you and hoping for the best!!

Congrats about the R&R! And that Amazon will replace the battery. My daughter had problems with her Kindle and few years ago. It turns out that the Kindle cover--the metal prongs that attached the cover to the Kindle had caused it to short circuit and shut down. Amazon credited her for the cost of the cover and gave her a new Kindle.

Wow, that's fantastic about them replacing it. Congrats.

And congrats on finishing your Agent R&R! That's fabulous.

So far my iPod Touch hasn't failed me. I have my old Kobo device (early model with no colored covers) to use as a back up, but I can't read my Kindle books on it. I mostly use my old Kobo device for reading my WIPs.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your replacement, Katie.

You might have been flabbergasted, but I wasn't surprised. They sent me a replacement when my Kindle stopped working, too.

You see, I don't think they make any money on the Kindles. They make money on the books you buy. So, Amazon wants you to have a working Kindle.

I hope your replacement comes soon!

First, YAY on the R&R! I did that a couple months ago (with positive results) and it turned out to be like an "interview" to see how well we worked together. What sucks is the wait for that followup call.

Second, I would. Die. If I couldn't access my Nook. Die. DIE. That's awesome you're getting a free replacement:)

Good job on finishing your revise and resubmit. That must be a relief. I need to go find my Nook. It may have died from lack of attention. Glad you got a replacement.

So glad to hear the story had a happy ending. Hate to hear about tragedy over the holidays.

I sat reading my kindle when I noticed a small crack in the corner of the screen. It didn't affect anything so I kept reading. Over the next few page turns the crack got bigger and started spidering down the screen. Soon the entire screen was black and unreadable. Well out of warranty, I could not return it. So I read no my phone until a replacement could be purchased.

Amazon knows how to soothe the annoyed customer. Congrats on finishing your revisions. And you timed it well, before Christmas.

Good luck with the resubmit!

weehee!!! A happy ending to the story! My husband has issues with his Kindle. But he has issues with ALL electronics, it seems. I was thinking it was just him--LOL! To be continued... :D <3

Amazon may be taking over the world but you can't argue with their returns policy.

So sorry about your Kindle. Glad to know you're getting a new one for free!

And good luck with the manuscript feedback.

So sorry for your loss, but at least you're getting a free replacement. My dear, sweet Gary was well out of warranty when I smooshed him last month. I'm saving up to get a spiffy new Paperwhite, but in the mean time I'm stuck reading actual white paper books. And I just ordered half a dozen new ebooks before it croaked. I'd read on the laptop, but it causes such eye strain. :(
