E- End of an Era

Most of you know about my addiction to teen shows.  Something about angst, love triangles, immaturity, and indecision makes my inner teenager sit up and beg with perked ears and tongue wagging. (sorry about the analogy - must still have my mind on dogs from yesterday's post

Sadly, one of my favorite guilty pleasure series- ABC family’s ‘Greek’ came to an end a couple weeks ago and I’ve been re-watching the first seasons ever since.  It’s amazing how a television show can take you back.  Like how Roseanne drops me right smack into my parent’s late 1980’s kitchen.

But one show that really makes me feel like I’m watching the beginning and ending of an era is ‘Friends’.  The show debuted in 1994 and ran ten seasons until the finale in 2004.   I’m pretty sure re-runs are still on television, no matter where you are.  I’m living in France and I get to watch it on a daily basis, dubbed over in French (which, for some reason, isn’t nearly as funny)

The thing about ‘Friends’ is that so much changed in technology and culture in just those ten years and we get glimpses of it all throughout the series.  Where the first season featured pagers, bowl haircuts and dial-up internet, the last episode had Rachel calling Ross from an airplane on her tiny cell phone.  Even the way the series was filmed changed- clearer, brighter images when the first season had that hazy ‘90’s glow’.

What shows make you feel like you’re watching another era or bring you back to an era of your own life?

I don't have a tv in my house - when I go home to my mum's I watch hours and hours! I don't watch boxsets either, bar Glee, I made an exception for that!
My boyfriend has never seen an episode of Friends, Frasier, the Golden Girls, Lost etc. He did somehow manage to see the sopranos! I'm set for gifts for him from here to eternity - box sets!

I am still totally indignant over the cancellation of My So-Called Life, and that was forever ago. It was the most realistic portrayal of teenagers, and OMG Jared Leto as Jordan Catalano. I still swoon.

Friends, Seinfeld and Frasier capture that Era for me. I don't watch much tv anymore though so don't know what would mark the ends now.

Speaking of teen dramas, Pretty Little Liars, brought me back to the days of '80's primetime soaps with the way it told the story, the cliffhangers and the artful direction.

Alex from Breakfast Every Hour was here.

I Love Lucy
As a kid, I watched the re-runs and enjoyed it. Now, irritation builds when I see the sexism. My viewing usually ends with my yell at Lucy, “Tell Ricky to make his own dang lunch once in a while.”

GRRRR
It is amazing what women went through back then not only in sitcoms but also in life.

Oh Friends and Seinfield! Yes!!! I still love the re-runs! ;-)

Interesting post - it really is interesting to see how shows like Friends and Cheers and Mash and Seinfeld - shows that were on tv for 10 years - really changed over time and changed with the times.

Change happens more quickly now than it did in earlier eras. We just watched the original Airplane! movie with the kids, and even some of the slapstick humor is a little dated.

Oh man. Now I have a craving to watch my Friend's DVD. Friends. Edit. Friends. Edit. What shall I do?

I hate it when shows end. I cried during the Friends finale, the Seinfeld finale, the Dawson's Creek finale... lol. Oh, and Blossom too. I wanted to be her when I was a teenager. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! :)

The really great shows last that long and the way they change with the times is part of what makes them great. Friends has to be right up there!

Cheers!! I have the first episode (1981 I think) and it's brilliant - it's a very conservative early
80's look but definitely 80's! Then Frasier next - like Friends - very 90's!!

Take care
x

That's so funny to see how much the characters changed in the two pictures. Much better hair at the end of the series.
I remember watching Roseanne in high school and people telling my boyfriend and I were like a skinny Roseanne/Dan couple because we were so sarcastic and always cracking jokes!

I love that show. I don't really watch that much TV what I do watch is mostly re-runs on youtube or some other site. I don't know that any of them really takes me back. Maybe because I don't watch that often just occasionally when the notion strikes and my internet is fast enough for it to actually play without stopping every 10 seconds to buffer.

I heart Friends! It's on about 10 times a day here in the UK - no exaggeration!

"Friends" does this for me too! It's my absolute favorite show. I started watching it in the 8th season and was so sad when it ended a couple years later. I have all the seasons on DVD and never get tired of watching them! You can definitely see how times have changed when you watch the seasons consecutively.

I miss the 90s all the time, especially the second half. It's not so much TV that takes me back, as it is music and movies. I love watching films that came out around then.

I love Friends, in fact I stayed up late last night to watch an episode.

'Twilight Zone,' kind of sums up my life :)
Thank goodness you didn't make a notation about'Glee Club' or I would have become violently ill. Gosh, I'm such a 'Gleek' LOL
Take care and kind wishes from Gary, shy and humble Gary:)

It's so funny that you mentioned Friends. I've been checking out each season and re-wathcing it (research for a project I'm working on). I just got to season 5. Even the haircuts are different. And now Rachel has a spray tan. Not to mention, airport security was lax back then. All these characters walk each other to the gate. That never happened post 9/11. I think Friends is my favorite but Dawson's Creek was awesome as well. Hmmm....maybe I'll check out a season?!?!

I definitely know what you are saying about friends. I love friends still but sometimes it does feel like stepping back in time.

Hmmm...MASH even if my life was nothing like that - it just brings the whole time back for me.

I'm sad that Greek ended too. I also liked Roseanne and Friends and am a definite TV junkie. Thanks for visiting me and I look forward to following you. Julie

Wonder Years... I remember always watching that... and Full House.

For me it's Seinfeld. And going Way Back to the Dark Ages: That Girl and The Carol Burnett Show. I'm also an I Love Lucy fan!

Don't watch TV, but when I did, I loved comedy, not sitcoms, they are why I quit watching, but variety shows like Luana mentioned, Carol Burnett was always a good, fun show.

Anything from my childhood- The Wonder Years, Growing Pains, The Cosby Show, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air!

Someone just said Happy Days - now that takes me back to when I was about 9-10 years. Fabulous!

My Grandma brought me up and she always let me stay up to watch Starsky and Hutch. It was a huge treat!

Definitely agree with you on Friends! And even though I didn't watch it when it was originally gone, my dad raised me on The Cosby show. Oh, and when I realized that shows that I used to watch like Family Matters and Step by Step I was a little traumatized by that end of an era.

My So Called Life and Buffy the Vampire Slayer take me back to two awesome places in my life. I rewatch them sometimes just to go back there. It's like hopping on a train to a very specific destination.

I could never get into Friends-I could never get past the impossibility of those big apartments when working it a coffee shop.

Magnum was a show like that for me, though-I was just out of high school when it started and a working professional when it ended.

I missed much of the 80's and 90's when it cam to television (a lot of work travel).
