Mama Din Ray No Fool

I was held hostage from the blogosphere yesterday.  But for good reason.  My youngest daughter Lucy turned three years old!!  My husband took the day off.  You’re thinking ‘oh how sweet, he took the day off to be with his daughter’....  Not really. France played its final match in the World Cup against South Africa:)  Which means I had a couch full of beer guzzling Frenchmen and dinner orders up to wazzoo.  Why is it that my French husband insists on eating American food while watching a mainly European sport?  I guess American BBQ is just. that. good.  In any case, we did manage to celebrate Lucy’s birthday despite the mind-numbing loss of the French team.

It’s nearing the end of the school year in France.  Tuesday is my last day and then I am off until the end of September!  -cue George Michael’s Freeeedoooom!  But until then, I am swamped up to my eyeballs in end of the year grading.  Lemme break it down for ya- I teach eleven classes twice a week each.  Each class has nearly thirty students.  I’m too tired to do that math, but basically- that’s a lot of frickin grading.  Which is why I usually save it for the end of the trimester.  And why I’ve only been posting a few times a week lately!  But rest assured, even if there’s nothing new on me blogst- I’m keeping an eye on all of yours! (I start shaking and hyperventilating and a weird rash breaks out around my fingertips if I don’t)

About today’s title- Do you ever notice shared traits with people in your family?  You’ll realize you’ve got your Dad’s smile and you’ll hear your mom break out in laughter and it’ll just hit you that you guys have almost the same laugh?  Or maybe you look just like your uncle and there’s a long running joke in the family that uncle was the ‘milkman’…Ahem, anyway-
The other day I was on facebook - I read my Mother’s status and it just hit me.  This was her status that day:

Quotes from Creepy’s Mom-

My cat thinks I'm the rudest human on the planet. I go to clean my kitchen floor, pick up his food, and he comes up behind me and says, "Dude," (my cat calls me Dude), "I was just about to eat that..."

I go to sit down, and he jumps up on the back of the chair, "Dude, I was just about to sit there..."

I clean out his kitty litter, and he starts pawing at the bag, "Dude, what are doing in my business?"'

That’s right people.  Apparently I’ve inherited my mother’s writing style.  I didn’t know that was possible.

Has anyone else ever noticed how someone close to you inadvertently contributes to your writing style?

P.S.- Be sure to come over to February Grace's blog 'Pitch Slapped' for Friday Bloffee-  This hilarious blogger has asked to interview me for her aspiring writer column and her questions stripped me bare.  So if you wanna know more about...me (that didn't sound narcasistic at. all.)  Be there or be square!

OOOO. Wow. I do not envy your grading. I thought my end of the semester at university sucked, all the final assignments and exams. I forgot to realize that the teachers need to mark all that crap and get it back to us in a timely manner... meaning as soon as the exam break is over. I feel bad for the teachers now.

Your mom's cat sounds like my cat, she always does that kind of stuff to me. That's sort of strange that you inherited your moms writing style. I didn't know that was possible either, to be honest.

Well, my looks take after my dads side of the family, meaning I look like a mix of several races (scottish, english and canadian - and yeah, canadian counts cause I'm a thirteenth generation on his side!). So I have dark hair, dark eyes and other general features like that. My mom's side of the family is 100% sweedish EXCEPT for my generation. (weirdly enough both my grandparents families moved to the same small town, had kids there and the kids ended up together...). Now, some of them do have brown hair....but they all have blue or green eyes and both my mom and sister are REALLY blonde. They all look pretty similar too. The only thing I have in common with my moms side? Every single person in the Wideen family (15 of us) has the exact same smile. It's kind of creepy when you look at us in pictures. The only difference? The size of the smile. But it looks the same. Sorry for the LONG comment. I'm trying to put off going back to studying....

haha, gosh you sound like you've got your work cut out for you! Greece lost last night too. The whole street I live in was filled with people screaming and yelling on their balconies. Everyon took their TVs outside cause it's stinking hot. Very funny sight actually. A sea of high rise Greek men yelling and screaming wearing no shirts, and their wives gossiping and laughing with the other wives next to them.

Anyway, yes I've noticed having the same attributes. The other day I looked in the mirror and pulled a face. It was my mother's look for oh I look shit, which is now mine ... lol. Not sure about the writing style though.

AA- lol, I can totally picture the Greeks outside with their tvs. I don't know if I've inherited her writing style or if its just a combination of her sense of humor and way with words.

Melissa- yeah, I could never be a 'real' teacher. Grading on a daily basis would break me. It sounds like your family has some beautiful traits! My fams a mix of french canadian and irish ancestory. Thank god my kids didn't get my dad's red curly hair. lol.

Happy Birthday to your daughter!!! I hope she had a lovely and memorable birthday and lots of pressies and fun! :-)

I can't say the same for France footie team. By the time I type this they may be on strike and refusing to play anymore!! Oh dear! But great that footie is being shown there though (USA aren't doing too badly - they may yet be in with a chance of making the last 16!).

Anyway, nuff football talk! LOL! Good luck with your mammoth grading task - good grief. At least your holidays are coming soon! Yay!

I think it's fab that you got your mum's writing style and that she has a facebook profile! LOL! Brilliant.

I don't know if my nearest and dearst contribute to my writing style but they sure have a great big influence on it in so many other ways! :-)

Take care
x

I love the way your mother's cat talks to her. I have chihuaha's so they call me "Chiquita mama".

As I age I'm finding I do the same annoying things to my daughter that my mother used to do to me.

And as for all that grading -- you're a better man than I Gunga Din.

Cracks me up that he'd take a day off to watch sports. Hubs takes a vacation near the NCAA playoffs every spring. I'm soooo not a sports fan!

Good luck with the grading! You'll get it all done! (Probably cuz you don't have a choice)

Don't think I got anyone else's style, per se, but What I read definitely influences what I write. Kinda like how you can't stop yourself from mimicking someone's accent? That's me.....

Oh, that is too funny! Your mom sounds like a character! She cracked me up!

Someone close to me affecting my writing...not really. I mean, I don't think. Sometimes, I notice that the people I am closest to affect my speaking, and that probably ultimately affects my writing to some degree.

My dad is half Japanese and looks Mexican. I have absolutely no Japanese quality; whereas, my siblings all have something - the nose, the skin tone, the hair. It's kind of strange...makes me wonder if my dad is my dad....

Too funny about the Frenchmen, european sport, and American BBQ.

I'd like to think (other than my mom's creativity), I've inherited nothing from my parents. Unfortunately I have inherited some of their worst trait, like my father's impatience. While couldn't I have inherited my mom's amazing patience. Go figure! And let's not even start on the math genes (still not sure where my brother got those from). ;)

No one in my family writes (other than my kids).

Oh, I forgot. I have something for you on my blog today. :)

Wow, that´s a LOT of kids!
And congrats on your 3 year old! But pity about France.

And wow, your mom does write like you! (or is it the other way around?) so cool!

Well, my mom is a journalist and writer, but she´good with women´s stories, you know, romantic yatta yatta. Unfortunetly, I inherited her tendency to be too cheesy. Oh well! I´m still very proud of it lol

Hahaha! Wow that's a lot of effing work. And tell your mom, my cat totally talks to me too:/

Le Bleu sure did have a terrible tournament! I suppose they got what they deserved after cheating Ireland out of qualifying. Karma is a beach (don't tell your husband I said that)!

Girl you are rockin' my socks of today! I love that your husband took the day off for his daughter *wink*wink* that's so sweet of him!

American BBQ is just that good!!

LOL I love that your cat calls you dude, mine aren't as nice!

I'll be Lucy thought that party of Frenchmen eating bbq in her house and cheering were there for her birthday not the World Cup. She'll probably remember it as the best birthday ever.

Happy Birthday to your little one. Speaking of inheriting traits, my three-year-old laughs like my mom- they both have this ridiculous guffaw that sounds like a goose flying into a window-HAWNK!

My grandfather wrote a spy novel and a non-fiction book on ESP and had them 'vanity' published. I couldn't read them, the writing was (sorry Grampa!) not my style. Maybe I'll try again.

Down with vuvuzelas! I'm sick of it!

Your Mom rocks.
My Dad, too, which is unfortunately who I inherited the stubby legs / short body from. My sister (*itch) (jk) inherited my mother's height and slender frame.
Happy birthday to your princess and GOOD LUCK with all that grading...

Lots of work! Glad your break is coming up. And yes my sister and I and my mom share a lot of the same mannerisms and speech oddities. :)

Your mom sounds hilarious! My cat calls me Dude, too. Actually, I think that's me talking to the cat...

I love that you guys were eating American bbq in France watching the World Cup! Ha!

Shannon O'Donnell said...

Ha ha ha! Your mom sounds awesome. And you sound way too busy! Sorry about the loss to the French Team. :-)

Talli Roland said...

World Cup. I am SO tired of hearing about it here in England. We have the stoopidest song ever this year for it!

Your mum sounds awesome! Love the quotes!

Raquel Byrnes said...

Talk about buried under your work...how do you get through all of that grading without running down the street screaming?

Funny about the BBQ and Happy Birthday to your little one.

Julie Musil said...

I cracked up at the fact that your mom has a Facebook pages! And Dude, that is so cool!

I do not envy your grading adventure. I felt tired just trying to multiply all those students. Best of luck to you.

You have so many blog awards, but I'm so glad you like the one I gave you!

I'll jump over to Grace's blog for the stripping bare.

LOL! I love your mom's cat! I haven't had anyone's voice from my family come into my writing yet...YET! What a great idea!

S.A. Larsenッ said...

Your mom is classic. What a resemblance. ";-)

I'm not sure about my family, well...you've got me thinking, now. I'll have to pay more attention to how those closest to me write. I'm leaning towards my daughter's status'. She's a tad zany and I think she gets it from me. Shh...don't tell. I'll deny it.

Jaydee Morgan said...

Love, love, love the quotes from your mom!

I haven't noticed any contribution to my own writing from people close to me but I've never really paid attention. I think I'm going to watch out for it now.

I'm kind of stuck on the part where you say your mother has a blog. I can't imagine my own mother blogging! But I guess my daughter's mother blogs...:) But she doesn't yet.

Is it your job that took you to France? Sounds interesting.

It is a daily battle for me not to be like my mother in all things, except for writing.
We are both writers. She is Americana Anthology/Lake Woebegon. I am Cinderella-happily-ever-after meets gritty historical and rated R. In writing, the only thing we have in common (besides the fact we both write) is that neither of us are published.

Erin Kane Spock said...

BTW, I assigned more or less, nothing in the last 2 weeks of school. Oh, there was some extra credit and opportunity to make up late work, but no projects. It's the first year I haven't had a slew of finals and a major project or two due the last week. My grading is DONE!

Hart Johnson said...

I don't envy the grading at all! So let me see if I have this... you're an American, married to a Frenchman, teaching in France... you teach what, English?

I love that you and your mom share a writing style! My mother is singularly lacking in humor. I think the only thing I really got from her is an insistence I'm always right. *shifty* I'm influenced to some degree though by my online friends, particularly my writing group (through the social stuff)--we just pick up turns of phrases and habits from each other... like that '*shifty*' up there...
