Failure, Finds, and Follower's Bloffee

Well, the first week of Nanowrimo is already half over and I have written a total of *drumroll please*:

0 words

I know.  This isn’t looking good so far.  In my defence, I did sit down and outline the first three chapters Tuesday.  But since then, I haven’t had any writing time and the scariest thing of all (and my biggest hurdle to overcome) is that it usually takes me weeks to get down the first chapter (see my post on the first chapter hokey pokey)- it’s where I’m meeting my characters and setting for the first time – setting the foundations and I’m one of those writers who just can’t seem to go on until it’s ‘just right’.  Once the first chapter is down though- things usually flow a lot faster.  But I’m definitely starting to feel as though I’ve bitten off more than I can chew.

It doesn’t help that I’ve recently discovered (been held hostage by) the Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs.  I could eat these books for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. – They remind me a little of the Sookie Stackhouse series but with werewolves and a much less girly protagonist.

Now on to a little bloffee.  I could use at least two cups this morning.
All you need to participate in our usual Friday Morning Follower’s Bloffee is:
1.  Comment.
2. Tell me what you’ve brought for morning bloffee.  (Today I have black coffee with sugar and some 'pains au chocolats' already laid out.)
3. Click on someone you don’t know in the comments section and check out their blog!  Voila- a new friend and potential follower connection has been made!

In the meantime, I should be around later on this morning to respond to comments and visit.  Tell me- any recurring themes you noticed in blogland this week?  Any ‘finds’ or books you couldn’t put down?

I hope you all have a great weekend!

I'm bringing eggs, because I'm starving, but no one else is here yet, so: boo!

I brought some more rice krispie treats that I had for breakfast already!

I wrote zero words yesterday for nano and that sucked. But there will be days like that. (or weeks! :)
I know I won't make the 50K goal, but nano is motivating me to write more than I usually would. I am finishing this novel this month, darn it! :)

Good luck!!!

Hey Matt, I'll take some of those eggs. I brought my appetite and some fresh cut strawberries and some calcium fortified OJ. Got to keep the bones strong.

I can't really call it a find, but a friend introduced me to the House of Night series. I'm eager to get into them after NaNoWriMo.

And no worries, Katie...you still have like, some weeks before you can consider yourself a failure :-)

I'm thinking something nice and light like a yogurt fruit parfait for bloffee this morning.

I LOVE the Mercedes Thompson books. I have all of them and read them over and over. Enjoy!

My husband did the covers for the Mercy series, hehe.. sorry I just have to brag because I think they are awesome, and I think he is awesome

I haven't read the books, but keep hearing they are really good :)

I brought a pot of coffee and sugar free French Vanilla creamer. (It may be sugar free, but I suspect if I read the label I'll find it still contains about a pound of salt.)

I'm stilling out the Novel Month again this year, because I was keeping the decks clear for a contract I was hoping to get (but I didn't... bummer... I need the money! :) ) and because I was anticipating some extra writing for the ROLF! game now that's also an iPhone/iPad/iPod/i-whatever game (which is coming to pass... but provides so little money it's a hobby).

I haven't really discovered any new books or websites, although I did waste a good portion of last night on YouTube watching videos from a young man named Ryan Higa. Was looking for something to pad out my "Nine Days of the Ninja" post series and found his hilarious videos.

And the only trend I've been noticing is bloggers abandoning their blogs out of frustration over small audiences or the topic they blogged on. Kinda sad.

The first chapters are always the toughest for me -- so much to establish as naturally as possible. I'm not participating in Nanowrimo, but I'm using it as an excuse to get started again on my first sci-fi book. Halfway through chapter 3!
Since I'm enjoying the Sookie Stackhouse books you make me want to pick up the Mercy Thompson ones now.

No worries on NaNo - last year I was too busy revising to start on time, but by the end of the month I had at least 20K. Not 50, but I'll take it.

And sometimes you just have to write that first chapter and cut it later. GOOD LUCK!!!

I was here earlier this morning with some dark roast and a muffin, but you weren't up yet. So I left them on the doorstep...hope you got them.

Don't beat yourself up about the NaNo aborted launch. Whatever you turn out during the rest of the month, 50K or not, will still prove useful. Have a great weekend!! :)

I'm bringing all the leftover Halloween candy!

Don't you just love finding a new series. I do. :)

Good luck with Nano. I agree, it's sometimes hard getting started but once I do, I'm good.

I brought nothing, because I turned up too late. But I'll be happy to scarf up any leftovers from this morning's fun!

Lots of NaNo stuff on the blog this week. I've got some First Impression critiques on mine, plus I'm kinda proud of a guest post I did for Sara Crowe's blog.

Although I'm not participating in NaNo, I did get a new idea this week and I've been playing around with the funnest part ... choosing names.

I brought a banana, and coffee because honestly that's all the time I had this morning. I hear you on NaNo, my dear. It took me until last night to hit any kind of stride.

Chicken burgers and broccoli. It's actually dinnertime for me. I had to work this morning.

Getting going with a new project is always tough but exciting for me... I'd get stuck in to the comfort food - chocolate and lot's of it!

Amie Kaufman said...

Irish Breakfast tea here!

Don't worry about NaNo, plenty of time to catch up... but I have a challenge for you.

Don't write the first chapter at all. Make yourself no more than 100 words of notes about what the content will be, and then start writing from chapter two as though everything that needed to be said in Chapter One has already been said. It gets you straight over the hurdle and you can start writing without looking back!

Well, it's Saturday now, but I'll bring the hot chocolate!

I'm reading Virginia Wolff's MAKE LEMONADE and it's amazing.

Best of luck getting that first chapter down!! I know, that's always the toughest for me, too. Happy NaNo-ing. :)

I have immense admiration for anyone who even looks twice at doing NaNoWriMo. I just know I couldn't commit to something so massive.

Wishing you lots of luck with it!

I'm behind in my NaNo word count too, but I'm in the 5K range. Looking forward to some heavy duty writing time this week though. Good luck with it!
