Bottom line is : A stomach flu is circulating the Creepy household. The house itself needs an in-depth visit from the cleaning fairies. Real job is losing it’s flavor and I’ve got brainstorming to do in order to prepare for another round of KISSING FOR COFFEE revisions.
I need a break from life.
And nothing spells ‘escape’ better than ‘SERIES’! (okay, yeah, I know the word ‘series’ doesn’t really spell ‘escape’ at all. Just work with me here a minute)
For me, there is nothing better than discovering a love for a first book in a series and knowing that there are at least two or three more books following my new favorite characters. So far in 2011 I discovered and devoured the Sookie Stackhouse and Mercy Thompson series- hours and hours of sinfully delightful plotlines and personalities that totally saved me from having a meltdown. After all- when compared to being targeted by murderous vampires or beaten down by evil fairies- a trip to the grocery store with the kids in toe just doesn’t seem so bad anymore.
So here I am looking for suggestions. Please tell me- What is your absolutely favorite book series- one that you could read over and over again? I’m up for anything!

We are all sick too. It's a fever plus aches and pains and bad attitiude kind of thing. I'm not into series books. I enjoy hours of reality tv when I'm sick - or old episodes of NCIS.
Ugh. sorry to hear about the sick. That time of year and all.
I just started reading "Ghost Story" the latest book in Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files" series. So far I am really enjoying it and glad to se the series still has some life.
I also have enjoyed Kim Harrion's "Rachel Morgan/The Hallows" books and Kelley Armstrong's "Women of the Otherworld" series.
I cannot tell you how many times I've read The Lord Of The Rings, and I've read Harry Potter 13 times over.
Vampire Academy. You're talking long series, right? And not trilogies.
We've avoided the flu so far. But that's because my husband made us get the flu shot. After he spent one Christmas "dying", he insists we get one every year. Okay the real perk was after being forced to rest up on our small, very uncomfortable love seat (which I bought will in university), he decided we need real furniture. The comfy kind. :D
If you like Patricia Briggs you might very well love Kim Harrison. Check out her Rachel Morgan: The Hollows series. You will not be disappointed.
Also along the lines of pulp urban fantasy you should check out Jim Butchers: The Dresden Files series.
I'd be remiss to not also mention George R.R. Martins: A Song of Ice and Fire series. They're some pretty heavy reading though.
I re-read the Harry Potter series, The Anne of Green Gables series (L.M. Montgomery) and The Little House series (Laura Ingalls Wilder) every few years.
If you want silliness, bawdiness and hilarity, definitely read the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich! I always re-read those when I'm sick and feeling blue. It perks my spirits!
If you like fantasy, the Axis Trilogy by Sara Douglass is really good.
Hope you and your family get better soon!!!
I don't read too many books more than once, but Terry Brooks' original Shannara trilogy is excellent.
I could read Harry Potter over and over again. But if you're looking for a grown up series, try the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (be forewarned that there is sex and violence but not gratuitous, imho). The books are doorstoppers (800-1,000 pages) to be sure, but Gabaldon's writing is exquisite and the two main characters, Claire and Jamie, are my favorite literary couple of all time.
There is nothing worse than the stomach flu. Blech!
I haven't read any long series, but the Body Finder series is at 3 books right now, and I think a fourth was added to the lineup. I love those stories.
I'm with the masses, I've re-read the Harry Potter series so many times in so many random orders I've lost count. However I also love the Anne of Green Gables series (thought I haven't finished reading it), I've read the Twilight series twice, and I've just picked up the first book in The Hunger Games and can barely pry myself away from it to do anything productive, like homework, laundry, or revisions ;)
Hope you and the fam feel better.
The House of Night series. Definitely! A fun, quick series perfect for not having much concentration available, which you don't when you're sick. Feel better soon, but enjoy reading! Let us know what you read!
Harry Potter rules! =)
I enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse series, however, I like the show more.
I've also read the Hunger Games trilogy this year. I really liked that one.
Awww hope you all get better and healthy asap!!
I do remember when I was ill, i re-read my Agatha Christie! :-) Take care
x
Yuck--I hope you feel better soon CQG. For years I have enjoyed Tony Hillerman's series--he effectively mixed Navajo customs and mystics with suspense and good crime fiction.
Don't hit me, but I haven't read a series since I was a kid! The only series that come to mind now is ... The Babysitters Club. LOLOLOL
Sorry to hear you are sick, there seems to be a lot of it about, as to series hmmm... have you read the Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper? Very good, The Earthsea book by Ursula leGuin? How about the Company series by Kage Baker? That's about all that spring to mind-hope you feel better soon
LOVE Sookie Stackhouse, HP, The Discworld series (Terry Pratchett), Song of Ice and Fire (but be warned, it isn't complete yet), and Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series come to mind. Happy reading.
The last series I read, and really enjoyed, was THE STRAIN trilogy by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro. Now those are the type of vampires I can really relate to! :)
Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy is my all-time favorite. Some people found it controversial but that's just silliness.
Absolute favorites: The October Daye series by Seanan McGuire, the Rogue Agent series by K.E. Mills, The Wing Slayer Hunter series by Jennifer Lyon, The Star Doc series by S. L. Viehl. There are more, but then we'd be here all day. =o)
Lord of the Rings. I must have read it 20 times when I was younger.
The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. Best paranormal romance.
Hmm. Most of the good ones have already been mentioned. Maybe the Gallagher Girl books by Ally Carter? Or PD James just published a sequel to Pride and Prejudice and I read an amazing review. Okay, that's not really a series, but worth a read.
We're just getting over chicken pox at our house.
Get well soon, all of you!
I suppose you've already read Harry Potter and The Hunger Games (wasn't I smart, figuring that out?) but what about a) The Mortal Instruments by Philip Reeve, which have not-so-lovely covers but are AWESOME and YA, or b) His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, which is what I read every time I'm sick, for some reason.
And I don't know if you've read Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking series. If you haven't... read it now!
I love the Outlander series but those books are so big that rereading takes forever.
I really like George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. It is quite well done.
I love Michael Connelly's Mickey Haller/Lincoln Lawyer series.
Not a big series guy... This was a good post to jog my brain.
Hope you feel better!
My favorite series is the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. ;)
I love a good series. In the YA realm, the FEARLESS series by Francine Pascal is fantastic. It's just been repackaged too.
I really enjoy Kathy Reich's Temperance Brennan books. I love the mystery, the clues, the quirky voice of the heroine. I don't always agree with her decisions, but I'm always happy to enter her world again.
Sorry about the sickness and all. Not that I caused it... I just sympathize.
Ummm, book series - Karen M. Moning's Fever Series.
I'm planning my novellas to be series-ish in that they're all in the same universe and some characters may repeat. But I also want them to stand alone.
I always loved the Borrowers series, and the Little House books and Carolyn Haywood's Betsy series. There's a series kind of similar to the Borrowers, the Mennyms, about dolls that secretly come to life, but I only read the first book.
Series books were pretty popular when I was a preteen (Babysitters' Club, Sweet Valley High, Taffy Sinclair, etc.), so it seemed only natural I'd write my own series books.
I know I'm in a small minority who's never read a single Harry Potter book and has no desire to do so, nor have I ever read LOTR or Twilight. I find it so annoying when people find this out and act like you're admitting to killing kittens or something because you didn't get into those particular fads. Not everyone has the same tastes.
Aw, I love the Sookie Stackhouse books! One of my other fave series is The Hunger Games, just in case you haven't read that. Hope everyone feels better soon!
Sucks when day job gets in the way of having good fun. But it sounds like the germs are more of a pain for you and yours right now!! I hope you feel better very soon!
I have like this therapist-client-level connection to Sookie Stackhouse.
I second Stina's VA suggestion and ante up with the Poison Study series.
Hmm... great question! Seems like every book is part of a series these days. I've read some starts to series this year that I liked very much like Matched and Daughter of Smoke & Bone. But the one I've loved returning to with my kids are the Narnia books. That's just such a timeless series.
Oh, and I did like the first few Sookie books. Feel better soon! :o) <3
I know Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz isn't romance reading, but it's one of my all-time favorite series. The last one was a little weird, but the first two make up for it.
You know what was actually better than I thought it'd be? Scott Westerfeld's trilogy: Uglies, Pretties, Specials. Then he wrote another one called Extra's that I have yet to read, but picks up with different characters in that same world. My 13-y-o non-reader really liked them. I think initially I was turned off by the titles, but there's much more depth to it than mere looks.
'Tis the season. I got a houseful of sick kids. I'm the only one not sneezing.
I can read The Chronicles of Narnia over and over again. Oh, and Orson Scott Card's Ender's Series.
Oh, no! I hope you guys feel better soon. I don't read a lot of series books because I'm impatient and I don't like to wait for the next one to come out, but I did enjoy the Harry Potter books (creative, I know) and Janet Evanovich's One for the Money series.
I always loved Judy Delton's Kitty series. I read it many times as a preteen, and just recently read it all over again. It was just as wonderful as an adult as it was as a preteen. It's set in St. Paul, Minnesota during the early Forties, and is about a Catholic girl and her two very opposite best friends. There were lots of things I noticed as an adult I never picked up on or really cared about when I was reading it when I was younger, like how Kitty's parents are never called Mr. and Mrs., but just "Kitty's mother" and "Kitty's father," and all the details of what it was like to go to Catholic school in the pre-Vatican II era.
I'm totally into Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and The Lost Olympians series. Those books just suck me in and I can't stop reading! Also enjoyed Hunger Games (until the last book). Yes, Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence books aren't really a series, but they're awesome nonetheless!
And I might be the only one on here to say I enjoyed the Twilight series, but I surely did, and couldn't put the books down.
Oh, dear. I hope you feel better soon. This is the worst time of year (not that there is ever a good time) to be sick. My favorite series is The Pink Carnation series by Lauren Willig.
Hope you're feeling better. My favorite series is The Mitford Series by Jan Karon.
Ann
may all have speedy recovery, bug out :)
Ok, I'm totally lame, but I liked the Twilight series.
Hope you're feeling better!
You might like the Kate Daniels series by Illona Andrews.
The Hunger games is awesome! I just read all 3 books in one week because I was hooked...right up there with Twilight (if you liked that)!
